Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

In this season where I have been feeling a little (or a lot) like its time to turn a page (...hit a new decade, the littlest is in Kindergarten, and all the craziness that is happening in the world) . I find myself seeking Gods grace, and courage, and a guidance often in preparation for this season. So I've found it extremely helpful and necessary even, to set aside time every day to do just that. An appointment to read Gods word, to meditate on the things that He has promised and to pray for my family and friends and the future.

Nothing says, "I'm a grown lady" like pulling out your Bible everyday? And I'll admit checking that off my list at the start of the day makes me want to give myself a high five.

My simple daily bible study helps me nurture my relationship with God and to fill my mind with what is true, and noble, and good. (Instead of comparing my life to what's happening on Facebook and Instagram, or judging myself on all of the things I (think I) am not). It is an encouraging and affirming reminder that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, that I have faults that do not matter, that I can do all things...

It seems a daunting thing, but the hardest part for me was just getting myself out of bed (earlier than usual). But once I was at my desk I was eager to get started with this very important meeting.

Only three things are needed: 1. A faith based book or devotional, 2. A Bible, 3. A Notebook (and pen). And then..

Set the time and place. Really, pick a time of day where you can give your full attention and add it to your calendar. Write it down or set it digitally so that it shows up just like the other meetings and activities of the day. 15-30 minutes. I like to cozy up at my little home office desk, but a coffee shop, a kitchen counter, a park bench will do..

Make it special. I look forward to my hot cup of lemon water. It works well for early mornings before I get to my coffee for the day. And my very favorite Paper Mate Flair pens for taking notes...

The Work. Most devotional books have a monthly theme (i.e. Gratitude, Patience, Obedience etc.) a daily reading with an associated scripture/verse. I use that verse and read the whole chapter. (so I get a chapter a day).

Use the Notebook to write down the date and the verses, quotes that you feel are speaking to you. I ask myself, how can I apply this to my life? What do I want to remember about this reading?

Some books to consider:

I picked up my old copy of the Jesus Calling devotional again recently. The November readings have really seemed to be addressing me quite directly. I have also been re-reading Fervent: A Womans Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer by Pricilla Shirer (and am now stalking her on Instagram).

Some others on my book shelf and wish list are:

So that's It. I wake up. I have a little talk with Jesus, and then get the kids up for the day and head down to start breakfast.

I'd love to hear about any other good faith based books/devotionals...
